{"id":9292,"date":"2023-04-24T10:05:10","date_gmt":"2023-04-24T08:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flamencomalaga.com\/las-malaguenas-what-does-this-flamenco-dance-consist-of\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T16:58:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T14:58:52","slug":"las-malaguenas-what-does-this-flamenco-dance-consist-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flamencomalaga.com\/en\/blog\/las-malaguenas-what-does-this-flamenco-dance-consist-of\/","title":{"rendered":"The Malague\u00f1as: What Does this Flamenco Dance Consist of?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>malague\u00f1as as a dance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a <\/span><b>traditional flamenco style from Malaga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that emerged in the early 19th century and has its roots in the ancient fandangos of the area, differing from these because its rhythm is increasingly slow and sustained, achieving exceptional richness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the Malague\u00f1as? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>typical malague\u00f1as dance from Malaga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a type of musical composition similar to the fandango that is normally danced with the typical costumes of the province such as the <\/span><b>malague\u00f1a de lujo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><b> bolero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>verdiales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><b> marenga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Generally, it is danced in couples and some of the steps are the arm movements, the promenade, and the face-to-face movements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Origin of the Malague\u00f1as <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The malague\u00f1a dance <\/span><b>emerged in the early 19th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  in the region of Malaga as a sung dance derived from flamenco. Throughout this century, it continued to be performed throughout Andalusia, gaining great popularity and being highly sought after by the public. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there were already some precedents, such as the Tiranas, the Jabera, the Fandango Ronde\u00f1o and other types of danceable fandangos that accompanied the dances of the <\/span><b>Bolero Dance School<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  since the mid-18th century. It is precisely at this time when the   <\/span><b>Fandango Verdial,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mother of the \u201cflamenco malague\u00f1as\u201d, which has multiple variants, emerged. <\/span> <\/p>\n<h3><b>Cultural and Social Importance <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Spanish Choirs and Dances Association<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  was the one that established the canons that are currently maintained as the foundation of the schematic structure of the malague\u00f1a as a dance. A perfectly defined and explained concept that makes dancing malague\u00f1as a graceful piece with beautiful poetic-folkloric content, most often of a costumbrist nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main architects of the transformation of malague\u00f1as as a dance is Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Alonso, who in the late 70s and early 80s, created with his work and that of other modern singer-songwriters a canon to follow when composing malague\u00f1as for festive dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, we can find different modalities of malague\u00f1as dance, differentiated in their rhythm and compass, which determines whether they can be danced or not. In the late 90s, they began to be sung respecting the rhythm and compass to make them more danceable, giving rise to the \u201cfestive malague\u00f1as\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How are the Malague\u00f1as Danced?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The malague\u00f1a is a flamenco dance that <\/span><b>is danced collectively,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually <\/span><b>five, six or more couples<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the dancers <\/span><b>form circles, tunnels, figures and braids.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The music is usually calm and the choreography consists of a circle of couples where the man faces the woman on the left, and both turn their backs to the other couples. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Malague\u00f1a de Alhaur\u00edn el Grande (M\u00e1laga)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0VO31C0d0Fw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, <\/span><b>how is the malague\u00f1a danced?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It starts by dancing in the same place for several measures, and when the half turn is indicated, the men turn on the outside of the circle, and the women on the inside, to dance with the opposite couple for another series of measures. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the leader indicates the full turn, the man turns to the left and advances outside the circle, and at the same time, the woman turns to her left and makes a turn while moving inside, until she is again in front of a new partner. This process is repeated throughout the entire performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Do the Malague\u00f1as Contribute to Flamenco?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The malague\u00f1a is a <\/span><b>song with a verse of four or five octosyllabic lines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with crossed consonant and assonant rhyme, which normally become six by repetition of the first and third. A song that does not conform to the compass, which in the world of flamenco is known as   <\/span><b>\u201cfree songs\u201d.  <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is, performed at the will of the interpreter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the predominant themes are those dedicated to love and mothers, so it is common that when seeing them, a climate of respect is imposed where silence prevails. Here are some examples: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a mother&#8217;s grave<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A flower never dries,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it&#8217;s watered by her children<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With tears of pain.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another example would be:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the swaying of the waves<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rocking each beat<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like the swaying of the waves<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that little by little approaches<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and gently kisses you<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you are the bride of the sea<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short,<\/span><b> the malague\u00f1as are a dance with their own characteristics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And, although they resemble the verdiales, they are part of a more recent era.
