Which doesn&#8217;t surprise us at all. Flamenco is grace, passion, and style, but above all, it&#8217;s an artistic expression full of energy that uses everything from gestures to exclamations to express itself.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, in this article, we explain what <\/span><b>flamenco jaleos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are, how they originated, and what their historical influence is on other styles that have subsequently emerged, such as buler\u00edas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Flamenco Jaleo? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we talk about jaleo as a flamenco style, we must keep in mind that there are two types of use. On one hand, the   <\/span><b>euphoric exclamations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that encourage during the dance, which you can hear if you attend a flamenco jaleo show in M\u00e1laga. And, on the other hand, <\/span><b>a genre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that played an important role in the popular folklore of the 19th century and introduced numerous musical elements into the world of sole\u00e1 and buler\u00edas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowadays, the <\/span><b>M\u00e1laga flamenco jaleo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  is a kind of jotilla or fandango sung in the Andalusian cadence, also including those expressions that flamenco artists exclaim throughout the show. However, although it may seem so, they are not exclamations made by chance, but respond to a meter performed in an \u201cinsistent\u201d manner, which distinguishes it from buler\u00edas and brings it closer to sole\u00e1, which has to adjust to the rhythm of all genres so as not to break the magic that any flamenco performance must convey. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the Origins of Jaleo? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within flamenco, jaleo originated in <\/span><b>Jerez de la Frontera,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  through which performances with an Andalusian flavor were offered. Over time, it dissolved and lost strength, until it evolved into the chuflas and buler\u00edas that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many consider that the flamenco clamor is a clear predecessor of the \u201csole\u00e1\u201d and many of its variants that fell into disuse when the relative styles crystallized, but the Extremaduran gypsies managed to revive them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Dance Flamenco Jaleo<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>flamenco jaleos, <\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the comp\u00e1s is very similar to that of buler\u00edas, so it&#8217;s sometimes confused, but the truth is that this style has its own unique phrases and tonalities. In fact, the M\u00e1laga flamenco jaleo has to adjust to certain characteristics that give it its musical structure: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tonality:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the melodies adopt tonalities based on Andalusian cadence and, sometimes, tonal cadences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Comp\u00e1s:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the beginning it&#8217;s marked like a buler\u00eda, but the style is softer and more similar to the \u201cjotera\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Verse:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> normally, the verses are 3 lines long, with humorous lyrics, always seeking good spirits and fun.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Keys:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the first beat is always accentuated, which can be part of a 3\/4 or 3\/8 time signature, depending on the speed at which the artists want to go.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Examples of Flamenco Jaleos<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interjection \u201c&#8221;Ol\u00e9!&#8221;\u201d is one of the most popular jaleos that continues to be very present today. But the truth is that we can identify numerous   <\/span><b>examples of jaleo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in popular Spanish compositions. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two examples of this are \u201c\u201d<\/span><b><i>En el caf\u00e9 de Chinitas and \u201cAnda jaleo\u201d, <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">popular songs composed by <\/span><b>Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both songs were recorded in 1931 and enjoyed great success, largely thanks to the singer Encarnaci\u00f3n L\u00f3pez, known as \u201cLa Argentinita\u201d, who sang and played the castanets while Federico accompanied her on the piano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summary, <\/span><b>flamenco jaleo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  is a flamenco style that tries to revive itself with gestures, applause, and sound expressions to encourage the dancers. A very artistic manifestation of stimulating the energy experienced within flamenco and with which the audience can identify.
